Seven Transportation Solution Providers Team Up to Demonstrate the Future of Intelligent Intersections: October 6, 2005

Anaheim, October 6 - During the week of November 6, 2005, seven transportation solution providers will team up at the SBC ballpark in San Francisco to demonstrate the future of Intelligent Intersections. Econolite’s intersection exhibition is one of many in a series of demonstrations in the Innovative Mobility Showcase (IMS), which features a variety of advanced ITS applications and will be a part of the upcoming 12th World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS).

Econolite’s Intelligent Intersection is the culmination of numerous advanced technologies developed by industry leaders working towards common goals: saving lives, saving time, and ultimately improving quality of life. This state-of-the-art signalized intersection will provide an exchange of information between the driver and the intersection’s operation. This exchange of information is made possible by creating a Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) wireless network between park vehicles and the park’s infrastructure. The primary objective is to demonstrate how effective data sharing, coordinated traffic signal timing, and ubiquitous traveler information can advance the effectiveness of a typical transportation system and provide useful information to the driving public. Each of the seven IMS Partners will play a significant role in the triumph of this demonstration.

Caltrans and California Partners for Advanced Transit and Highways (PATH) - will be demonstrating an automated bus guidance system, which will automatically steer the bus traveling through a designated route in the park. While on its route, the bus will pass through the Intelligent Intersection and issue a signal light priority request to the traffic signal controller. The bus will then receive a green light as it passes through the Intelligent Intersection. Caltrans and PATH co-lead the development of and will present along with Econolite the Gap Advisor demonstration which will illustrate a concept that warns drivers when it is unsafe to make a left turn in the presence of an oncoming vehicle. As part of this demonstration, and to illustrate a viable “vehicle-infrastructure integration (VII)” component of this system, wireless communication may be used to provide vehicle position and motion information to the intersection. This will demonstrate VII in action, and an important aspect of any “smart” intersection, wherein the future vehicles and intersections can talk and listen to one another, making the Intelligent Intersection truly safe.

Cornet Technology - designed and integrated both a wired & wireless network to provide a “live video feed” over an IP based Network from the IMS Showcase in Parking Lot “B” at SBC Park to the Moscone Center where the 12th World Congress will take place. Inclusive in Cornet’s “live video feed” will be Econolite’s Intelligent Intersection plus additional Autoscope cameras which will provide IMS partners with multiple Autoscope video sources, as well as the main wireless network drop for the parking lot.

DaimlerChrysler Research and Technology North America, Inc. - brings safety to the forefront by addressing Traffic Signal Violation Warning Accidents at intersections, which are often caused by vehicles attempting to cross an intersection on a red light. The demonstration will use a Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) radio combined with traffic signal data to periodically transmit phase information to approaching vehicles. This message contains signal phase and timing information, as well as signal direction and stop line location. When a vehicle receives the wireless message, it compares the signal information with its speed, position, heading, and deceleration and warns the driver if the vehicle is in danger of entering or crossing the intersection when the signal is red. DaimlerChrysler Research is working on the Vision of Accident-Free Driving. In the future, DaimlerChrysler assistance systems will be able to “comprehend” the entire environment of a vehicle, and will thus contribute to enhanced road safety.

Econolite – the intersection system will collect traffic information using Econolite’s Autoscope Video Detection equipment. As vehicles move through the intersection; traffic volume and average speed data, as well as video images are captured and displayed in real-time. Econolite will also demonstrate a revolutionary new type of signal priority through the use of DSRC combined with Econolite’s ASC/3 traffic controller, which will allow vehicles and a wireless medium to simulate the passage of emergency vehicles. Econolite’s Data Collection and Management Service (DCMS) will provide a server link to the Internet to support web-based applications provided by other partners of the demonstration.

Mark IV - observers will witness Mark IV’s 5.9GHz DSRC demonstration from within a bus provided by Tri Delta Transit. The Mark IV bus will pass through the Intelligent Intersection and real-time signal information will be broadcast via DSRC to displays on the bus. The DSRC system on the bus will issue a signal light priority request to the intersection’s traffic signal controller, and then receive a green light as it passes through the intersection.

Navteq – part of the leadership team, defined all the standard message sets and communication protocols while also defining the map data for location referencing in all the partner demonstrations for intelligent intersections. NAVTEQ will demonstrate the capability to process full communication inputs on the live intersection status. This demonstration is interoperable with the larger VII comprehensive set of VII demonstrations happening at World Congress.
