Specializing in customized COTS boards for low-volume military and aerospace projects
Springfield, VA -- July 11, 2007 -- As COTS vendors abandon older products to stay competitive, they create a void for customers who rely on these products. Where others see obsolescence, Cornet Technology, Inc. sees opportunity. Hence the company's communications division is launching an Embedded Design and Manufacturing Service to address the engineering needs of low quantity, long-term military and aerospace programs. This service is a natural progression for Cornet Technology, Inc. which has an 18-year history of providing responsive custom products to military clients.
According to Manville Chan, CTC's Program Manager for Embedded Systems, “The catalyst for the launch of this service was a contractor who approached us to design a custom PowerPC based VME single board computer. The project presented three unique challenges: obscure technology, an obsolete component, and an unbelievably short time frame. We delivered the project ahead of schedule and sourced the obsolete component from a secondary market to satisfy the customer's exact requirements.”
In the course of fulfilling this contractor'a needs, it was discovered that a number of established vendors were discontinuing their military commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) products due to industry consolidation and the European Union's RoHS initiative. As a result, military embedded COTS buyers were having difficulty purchasing needed products. This left a gap in the embedded COTS market which Cornet Technology has the engineering knowledge, purchasing skills and manufacturing capacity to fill.
Cornet Technology's Embedded Design and Manufacturing service offers military and aerospace programs with form, fit, and functionally compatible products to those in use allowing them to avoid the need for costly rewrites of their application code and re-qualify their systems.

Company's Proactive Environmental Posture Reflected in Voluntary RoHS Compliance
Springfield, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 16, 2007 -- Cornet Technology, Inc. (CTI) (www.cornet.com), a manufacturing and professional services company, announced today that its corporate-wide environmental protection plan is compliant with the European Union's (EU) Directive on the Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS) in electrical and electronic products. Moreover, the company's proactive actions make it compliant with California's recently enacted RoHS legislation.
To meet RoHS requirements, the company upgraded its surface mount assembly line to implement a lead-free process at its Springfield, Virginia manufacturing facility. The enhanced process includes replacing the lead components on circuit boards with new, eco-friendly, lead-free parts. This new surface mount technology (SMT) equipment gives CTI the flexibility to meet all of its customer's product needs now and in the near future. In addition, CTI upgraded its equipment to include a new solder paste printer, which allows very precise printing of the lead-free paste while a new reflow oven, with the capability of reaching the extremely high temperatures necessary for soldering lead-free surface mount components, was also added.
This upgrade also allows CTI design engineers to create compact boards that require less space, while still delivering high-quality product enhancements. Together, these equipment and process upgrades fulfill the requirements of the RoHS Directive, making CTI operations fully RoHS compliant.
The RoHS Directive responds to the growing concerns over human health and environmental risks associated with the use of certain environmentally sensitive materials in the production of electronic products. The EU implemented the RoHS Directive in July 2006, with compliance regarding the use of unleaded solder in telecommunications products targeted for 2010. California, the first U.S. state to apply these standards, adopted similar legislation in January 2007.
CTI's decision to achieve early RoHS compliance positions CTI ahead of most of its competitors in terms of these industry standards. As the telecommunication industry adapts its technology to meet RoHS standards, many component parts will become obsolete. For CTI, the shift to lead-free soldering allows the company to maintain a competitive advantage, while incorporating an ecologically friendly manufacturing process.
Wally Schott, Director of Operations, Cornet Technology, Inc., said, “Cornet Technology made a conscious business decision to become RoHS compliant because the company recognizes that adopting green manufacturing techniques is not only environmentally responsible, but also beneficial to our employees. Even though RoHS regulations have yet to take hold in Virginia, Cornet Technology is proactively working to minimize the impact of our manufacturing facility on the local environment of Northern Virginia -- and our employees -- by voluntarily incorporating the EU and California RoHS directives.”

Local Firms Profit From Fall Of Dollar
Washington, DC (WUSA) -- November, 17, 2007 -- Some companies in the Washington, DC area are seeing a boost in foreign sales as the American dollar falls in comparative value to foreign currencies, particularly the Euro. As the effect flows through the American manufacturing sector, and exports boom, the foreign trade deficit is falling as well.
"Because the dollar has fallen in price, our products have become very competitive and, as a result, we see a lot of sales activities picking up right now," said Sunhil Mehta, the president of Cornet Technology's Video Convergence Division, which manufactures video surveillance devices used at border crossings and in airports.
The company has about 170 employees, of whom approximately 100 labor in the Springfield manufacturing facility. Executives say the increasing demand caused by the falling dollar, particularly in eastern Europe, is going to mean more work at the Springfield facility, located just off Washington's beltway.
"Absolutely," Mehta told 9NEWS NOW. "We have here all of our products designed, developed and manufactured. And we see that, due to continued growth, we will open up some more slots, and we will have more jobs for local people."
The company has opened subsidiaries in Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan, and India. Seeking to expand markets further, Mehta has just returned from a scouting expedition in Mexico. This week a Cornet sales team is in the Middle East as part of an economic development trip sponsored by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Cornet has been growing at about 10% a year with a reported $40 million in sales. Mehta says the increasing demand caused by the falling dollar is expected to boost that growth even higher this year.
