By 2009 all U.S. utilities must comply with the NERC critical infrastructure schedule which requires that their facilities be audit compliant with Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) standards. To help utilities meet the 2009 deadline, Video Convergence, a division of Cornet Technology, Inc. offers iVDO SmartEdge a comprehensive surveillance tool that brings to utilities the advantages of at-the-edge video analysis. With this ISO-9001 compatible, commercially available product utilities can quickly and confidently meet the physical security threat requirements detailed in the CIP 004 and 006 standards.
Performing video analysis, at the edge, within a Cornet Technology iVDO encoder cuts down on network loading, increases system processing power, dramatically decreases the amount of computer hardware needed for central site analysis, and lowers the overall cost of the surveillance system. iVDO SmartEdge uses algorithms, rules, and functions to generate automatic alerts based on the following events:
- Object Classification
- Restricted Area Monitoring
- Single and Double Virtual Fence Breach
- Loitering in a Sensitive Area
- Unattended Package
- Stolen Property
- Entry and Exit Detection
Typical Utility Application

- Powerful real-time video analytics-based surveillance at the system’s edge (where the cameras reside)
- Standards-based IP video technology for surveillance
- Lowest possible IP networking bandwidth for video transport
- Multi-user and multi-center architecture for instant situational awareness for all concerned parties
- Temperature hardened and ruggedized video and network components
iVDO SmartEdge At-The-Edge
iVDO SmartEdge is an added-value feature of Cornet Technology iVDO encoders and VDOScope management software that takes cost effective video analysis to the edge of the network. iVDO SmartEdge uses ObjectVideo’s OnBoard rules technology to detect unauthorized entry and exit, unattended packages, and suspicious loitering. If a rule is violated, iVDO SmartEdge automatically issues an alarm and an alert to security staff and video is streamed to the control center and saved to an NVR. Thus security staff is alerted to security breaches and events quicker with more intelligence improving facility, personnel, and asset safety. Since iVDO SmartEdge sends video to the command center and to the NVR only when a violation is noted, network bandwidth is reduced. This benefit combined with increased system processing power that dramatically decreases the amount of computer hardware needed for central site analysis ensures lower overall surveillance system costs. Another tool of iVDO SmartEdge is object classification. Objects can be classified as a person, car, animal, etc.
