Facility Surveillance Intelligent Transportation Systems Utility and Industrial
Product Partners Success Stories GSA Schedule

Thanks to the Intelligent Transportation systems initiative funded by the Federal Highway Administration our nation's major roadways are using advanced technology to improve the efficiency and safety of surface transportation systems. This translates into quick and efficient incident responses, better informed commuters, and more efficient use of public transportation.

Video Convergence, a division of Cornet Technology, Inc., is involved in multiple ITS programs across the United States. For over 5 years, our encoders and decoders as well as our video switches have been used to ensure that video streams from roadside cameras reach Traffic Operations Centers in a timely manner. Video Convergence has also been involved in a number of successful ITS integration projects as the prime or integration subcontractor. We have built a reputation as a company that knows ITS applications, goes the extra mile for our customers, and provides a good product at a reasonable price. We continuously improve and expand our products and services to ensure that our customers receive the best products for their specific needs.

Building Value-Based Systems

Each customer's project comes to us with its own unique requirements; it is Video Convergence's task to build value into every one of these projects.

Arterial Traffic Management
(ATMS)
An ATMS is an advanced transportation management system incorporating the latest communications technologies. A successful ATMS system provides controlled -access, real-time correlated traffic information by integrating multiple ITS subsystems (CCTV, CMS, traffic controllers, and detectors). An efficient system interfaces with surrounding jurisdictions and agencies. The ability to integrate traveler web sites and provide video feeds to the media is also becoming an integral part of an ATMS. The effectiveness of such systems is measured by the ability of a city, county or region to efficiently handle routine traffic congestion, incidents and special events. Video Convergence has a successful track record of deploying Arterial Traffic Management Systems. By building a system based on both ITS and NTCIP standards, we are able to implement a modern system whose value is the ability to regionally manage traffic while reducing the cost of future expansion.

Highway Traffic Management
A highway traffic management system generally includes multiple ITS subsystems such as CCTV, CMS, video and wireless detector, weather monitoring, and highway advisory radio; poised on a linear network. Video Convergence¡¯s IP networking expertise allows us to effectively integrate all these devices into a valued-based resilient networked system, without hard boundaries, that provides transportation department personnel and the traveling public with timely traffic information. Video Convergence minimizes deployment delays through careful planning and by validating all equipment before installation.

Why Video Convergence?
Video Convergence works closely with your staff to provide end-to-end ITS solutions that encompass a wide range of services from consultation to deployment. We enable you to get the best products available to meet your present and future requirements.

Video Convergence is a division of Cornet Technology, Inc. (CTI), a major customer centric manufacturer and integrator of video and network communications products for both the military and commercial markets. As a division, we can leverage Cornet Technology's extensive experience in providing targeted product and integration services to the Intelligent Transportation market as well as resources such as usage of CTI's ISO 9001:2000 certified plant for testing, assembly and staging of all integration projects. To complement Video Convergence's staff, we can draw on Cornet Technology's pool of video and communication experienced software and engineering resources.

Sample Projects

I-580 Smart Corridor ITS Project in the cities of Pleasanton,
Livermore and Dublin, CA

As prime contractor, Cornet Technology, Inc. (CTI) built an advanced transportation management system that provided state-of-the art integrated arterial management system for the cities of Pleasanton, Dublin and Livermore, California along the I-580 corridor. This contract included the establishment of Traffic Operation Centers (TOC) in each of the cities with full video monitoring capabilities at the center. It is believed that this is the first system to integrate the transportation needs of multiple cities into an integrated system that provides each city with redundant facilities and systems. It is fully compliant with ITS and NTCIP standards.

The system has resulted in increased coordination between cities in congestion handling and special event handling. The video surveillance system has equipped the cities to deal with routine or major disaster incidents. The video wall display integrates new as well as existing video cameras. Standards compliance within the project will reduce capital investment for system expansion in the future, as the cities will be able to add the best and most cost effective equipment at that time.

Missouri Department of Transportation (MODOT)
Scout Project

To address congestion on the major Kansas City roadways, the Missouri DOT and Kansas DOT came together to design the Scout traffic management system. The goal of the Scout project is to increase safety and reduce congestion along 75 miles of freeway in Kansas City by monitoring traffic, resolving congestion, and keeping motorists informed of highway conditions. This project consists of roadside sensors, detectors, cameras and intelligent software. To bring video from the roadside cameras, the Scout project utilizes Cornet Technology IP encoders and decoders. These encoders sit alongside the 75 cameras that are part of the Scout system. The CTI encoders ensure that high quality; low latency video streams from the cameras are received in a timely manner at the Traffic Control Center and decoded for evaluation and quick incident response.

New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA)
Advanced Traffic Management Incident/Detect/Evaluate/Act System

The MTA Bridges and Tunnels authority handles over 800,000 vehicles a day over seven bridges and two tunnels in New York City, making it the largest such authority in terms of traffic volume. Cornet Technology encoders and decoders are being used by Transdyn as part of the Advanced Traffic Management Incident/Detect/Evaluate/Act System that they designed and are installing for the MTA. As its name implies, this project will enable the authority to efficiently detect, evaluate, and react to incidents on the bridges and within the tunnels and provide real-time motorist advisories through electronic message signs. Cornet Technology products, part of the new state-of-the-art video over IP distribution system, ensure that quality video is received by the operations center for broadcasting between the on-site facilities and the Operations Control and Communications Center.

Democratic National Convention

In preparation for the Democratic National Convention, the IBI Group developed the Massachusetts Interagency Video Information system (MIVIS), to improve public safety through the coordination of various public transportation and public safety agencies through the sharing of each agency's surveillance video.

CTI's encoders were placed at each remote camera site and linked to a high-capacity IP network. The encoded video is multicast throughout the network to any desktop authorized to receive the stream such as the Boston Transportation Department (BTD), SmartRoutes (a traffic information provider), the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), the State Transportation Building (STB), and the Traffic Operations Center (TOC).

The MIVIS system was pulled together and installed a mere eight weeks before the Democratic National Convention (DNC) started, making it one of the fastest and most remarkable successes of this magnitude. The system continues to support agency coordination for regional events and major emergencies. It is expected to provide additional functionality and expand to statewide coverage in the future.
